Washington, DC – United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), a member of the Congressional Equality Caucus, released the following statement on Uganda’s enactment of anti-gay legislation that levies harsh penalties on LGBTQ+ persons, including the potential for life in prison or the death penalty:
“Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act subjects LGBTQ+ Ugandans, and those perceived to be part of this community, to abuse, discrimination, and violence. As the world’s leading democracy and defender of human rights, the United States needs to be unequivocal in its condemnation of this law and our call for its repeal. The harsh and inhumane penalties Uganda has levied against members of the LGBTQ+ community represent just the latest development in the systematic dissolution of rights for this vulnerable population in the country. This action not only sets a dangerous precedent but threatens the multi-decade partnership the United States and Uganda have fostered, which has lifted millions out of poverty. As the United States continues to review the implications of this law, sanctions and other restrictions should be on the table. Those who target others simply for who they are or who they love, must be held accountable.”
